A thematic chess tournament is a tournament with every game is played with a certain opening variant. NMCC Weekly Blitz Grand Prix 2009 ( 5th April 2009)!

Two NMCC Monthly Blitz tournaments will be held on 5th April 2009 ( Sunday). The 1st tournament start at 11.30 am and the second tournament start at 3.30 pm .

The details of the grand prix is as below:-

Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) consist 10 weekly tournament and one Final tournament . For March/April 2009 legs, a total amount of RM 1000.00 cash prize has been guaranteed !

1. TOURNAMENT

In March/April 2009, NMCC will organised 2 tournaments a day on 7,14,21 and 28 March and 2 tournaments on 5th March . The final will be on 12th April 2009 ( Sunday) so that there will be 10 tournaments for the 1st leg.

Number of players in a tournament .

Maximum number of players in one tournament is 24 players. Players will be divided into a maximum of two group with 10-12 players in one group. In the event of more than 12 players but less than 20 players take part, only the first 12 players who have paid the registration fee will be allowed to play .

Winner of each tournament is the player who collect the most points in a single round robin blitz tournament.

Prize : Weekly Tournament Champion will receive RM 70.00 . The Final Champion will win RM 300 cash prize.

Fees : RM 15.00

2. FINAL TOURNAMENT

The Final Tournament will future 10 top players who collect the most points from a maximum of 7 tournaments.

This 10 best players will play in a single round robin tournament to decide a Champion who will receive RM 300 cash prize . 2nd and 3rd place will receive a consolation prize from NMCC.

There will be two tournaments a day and a total of 10 tournaments in one cycle. At the end of the 1oth tournament , a Final Grand Prix will be held which consist 10 player who collect the highest points from a maximum 7 best tournaments.

The date for the organisation of the March/April 2009 Grand Prix tournaments are 7, 14, 21, 28 March , 5th April and the Final on 12th April 2009.

The above rules are subject to change by the organiser .

FM Peter Long NMCC Chess Talk : Chess Training

FIDE Master and former National Champion - Peter Long (photo above) gave a chess talk organised by Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur on the 22nd March 2009. Peter Long is a FIDE Trainer, Fide Arbiter and FIDE Web Editor. Recently he was appoint as Concillor for both the FIDE Trainers' and FIDE Chess in Schools Commission. Peter is two time National Junior champion who in 1986 also won the National Championship. In the past, he was also a prolific chess writer with columns in 3 major national newspapers.

NMCC Chess Talk : Chess Training by FM Peter Long - 22nd March 2009 !

FIDE Master and former National Champion - Peter Long (photo right) will give a chess talk at Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) on 22nd March 2009 (Sunday , 2pm-4pm). Peter is two time National Junior Champion (MSSM) and won the National Championship in 1986 . Currently, he is a FIDE Master (FM), FIDE Trainer and FIDE Arbiter.

He is one of Malaysian leading player in the 1980s, many times participant in Asian Team Championships and Olympiads before his retirement from tournaments play in 1993. Experienced chess columnist and former Executive Secretary of the Malaysian Chess Federation where a key initiative was to start a National Junior Training Program in 1984. He then develop the first National Junior Training Scheme in 1985-1986. In this period, he was also an organiser and arbiter of numerous international and national events, and for over 10 years during and after was also a prolific chess writer with columns in 3 major national newspapers.

In December 2006, he qualify for the FIDE Trainer title by attending a coaches seminar and passing after submitting two papers and making a presentation. He is also the Director/Principal of the ASEAN Chess Academy – Malaysia . In June 2007, Peter was appointed Executive Director of the ASEAN Chess Confederation and during the Asia Individual Championships (World Cup Qualifiers) later that year, he attended a course and qualified as a FIDE Arbiter .

Last year, Peter Long was appointed as FIDE Web Editor by FIDE and Global Chess and ecently, he have been appointed Concillor for both the FIDE Trainers' and FIDE Chess in Schools Commission

FM Mok Tze Meng Chess Talk !

On 9th March, NMCC organised a chess talk by FIDE Master (FM) Mok Tze Meng. Mok is well known chess player in local scence. He is also a National Master (NM) and a national player who has play many international tourney such as the Olympiad and Zonal.

In the chess talks, Mok touch about his chess playing and coaching experience , his career before chess, his experience coached by the late Georgian GM - Eduard Gufeld and the most interesting part is when he show some of his best and worse game.

Mok is a brilliant chess lectrurer . He likes to tell stories - and his stories is really great because he tell it with passion and sincerity. He is also very profesional when faced with critics. Adianto is without doubt, Indonesian greatest player ever and this game were played in 1993 which was during his peak time ! Although Mok "only" draw the game , the critical moment occur when he play a brilliant idea in the endgame especially on move 31st and 32nd . According to Mok, even Gufeld missed the brilliant idea when he show to the late GM !

29.a4!? other idea didn't make much different because for e.g 29.Kc2 Rc8+ 30.Kb3 a4+ 31.Kb4 Rc2 32.Kxb5 Rxb2+ 33.Kxa4 Rxa2+; another try also didn't work 29.b3 Rc8+ 30.Kb2 Rh8 white couldn't make much progress . 29.Kd1 or 29.Kd2 also didn't change the overall result. You can check with your own Rybka/Fritz :) 29...bxa4 30.Kb1 a3! 31.b3 31.bxa3 a4 and white's king will find it difficult to progress 31...f5! Mok mentioned that he show this position to Gufeld and the great GM suggest 31...Rc8 which is a good move for e.g 32.Ka2 Rc3 33.Rg3 Rc1 34.Kxa3 Ra1+ 35.Kb2 Rh1 36.Rg4 Rd1 37.Kc2 Rh1 38.g3 Ra1 39.Kb2 however Mok has better idea after 31...f5! 32.exf5 Rg8!! This is the brilliant idea. Black play and important in between move . Frankly speaking i saw the idea f5 break but reject it because i think white simply have Re4. I missed the Rg8 idea or to be more excact - i didn't see it at all ! 33.Re4 33.Rxg8?? World Police Champion and National player Ismail Ahmad had a tough day during the 1st NMCC simultaneous display at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail yesterday ( 8 March 2009). He faced 14 strong opponent which include 12 MSSM KL players such as Muhammad Izz Saifuddin, Nor Izzudin, siblings - Nurul Akila Rohiza and Nurul Atikah Rohizan. The MSSM KL players managed by their team manager Mr. Suhairi participate in this simul as part of their preparation for next week MSSM in Klang, Selangor. The other two players are season player Norazman Ismail and Khairul Anuar.

Who is this camera shy player?

Yes, it's NorAzman Ismail. He is the first person to beat Ismail in this simul . As some of you had already know, he is the only player so far who could "beat" Malaysian no.1 - IM Mas Hafizul without playing a single move!

Norazman Ismail is of course a good player. He didn't plan to play in this simul but "fall" under strong pressure from us and agreed to play. He actually accompanying his son who also play in the simul.

33...Ng6 ?? Akila should hold the game with 33...Qxe3 34.Nxe3 g5 35.Bb3 Be6 34. Qxe5! Nxe5 35.Ne7+ Akila probably missed this fork and after 35...Kf8 36.Nxc8 she resign because she will lost a piece and the game . 1-0

NMCC Monthly Blitz start today ( 7 March 2009) ! Two tournaments will be held . The 1st tournament start at 11am and the second tournament start at 3pm . Read the details below.

Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) will organised a monthly Grand Prix blitz tournaments which consist10 tournament held ever Saturday and one Final tournament . For March 2009 legs, a total amount of RM 1000.00 cash prize has been guaranteed !

1. TOURNAMENT

In March 2009, NMCC will organised 2 tournaments a day on Saturdays ( 7,14,21 and 28 March) and 2 tournaments + 1 final on 29th March 2009 ( Sunday) so that there will be 10 tournaments for March 2009.

Number of players in a tournament .

Maximum number of players in one tournament is 24 players. Players will be divided into a maximum of two group with 10-12 players in one group. In the event of more than 12 players but less than 20 players take part, only the first 12 players who have paid the registration fee will be allowed to play .

Winner of each tournament is the player who collect the most points in a single round robin blitz tournament.

Prize : Tournament Champion will receive RM 70.00 .

Fees : RM 15.00

2. FINAL TOURNAMENT

The Final Tournament will future 10 top players who collect the most points from a maximum of 7 tournaments.

This 10 best players will play in a single round robin tournament to decide a Champion who will receive RM 300 cash prize . 2nd and 3rd place will receive a consolation prize from NMCC.

This competition runs every Saturday ( for the month of March 2009 ) and 2 tournaments + final on Sunday 29th March 2009 . There will be two tournaments a day and a total of 10 tournaments in a month. At the end of the 1oth tournament , a Final Grand Prix will be held which consist 10 player who collect the highest points from a maximum 7 best tournaments.

The date for the organisation of the March 2009 Grand Prix tournaments are 7, 14, 21, 28 and the Final on 29th March 2009.

The above rules are subject to change by the organiser .

FM Mok Tze Meng NMCC Chess Talk ! 9th March 2009

FIDE Master and former National Champion - Mok Tze Meng (photo right) will give a chess talk at Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) on the 9th March 2009. Mok Tze Meng is a National player and well known coach. He has vast experience playing for national team in international tournaments such as the Olympiad ( Novi Sad 1990, Yereven 1996, Istanbul 2000, Calvia 2004, Dresden 2008), The Zonal ( Jakarta Zonal 1993, Vung Tau 2000) and tournament such as ASEAN Chess Circuit, Tarakan, Indonesia 2008 .

Mok has won many local chess tournament and his recent succes is winning the Terengganu "Semi" Open Tournament last year. His current FIDE rating is 2283.

Next Friday, Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) will organised the NMCC Friday Night Blitz Thematic Tournament 2/09 : Chigorin Defense . This will be the second edition of this thematic tourney. The 1st edition saw Abdullah Che Hassan won the tournament which features the Sicilian Dragon as the theme.

The Chigorin Defense is a chess opening named for 19th century Russian grandmaster Mikhail Chigorin.

A thematic chess tournament is a tournament with every game is played with a certain opening variant. And for next Friday, the Chigorin Defense (below) have been selected as the starting position. ( with white to play) .You will find the board set up for this variant at the start of the game. So all white player will start the game on move 3! And black player will start after white's 3rd move.

28th February 2009 - Abdullah Che Hassan emerged as the winner of the first edition of the (Neo Manhattan Chess Centre) NMCC Friday Night Blitz Thematic Tournament held at the NMCC, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur last night. This thematic chess tournament is a tournament with every game is played with a certain opening variant. And last night, Sicilian Dragon position ( below) have been selected as the starting position. ( with white to play) .You will find the board set up for this variant at the start of the game. So all white player start the game on move 8! And black player start after white's 8th move.

Seven players took part in this double round robin blitz tournament with 5 minute time control for each player. Many interested players couldn't make it to the tournament because of last minute announcement by NMCC and we feel highly regret for it.

Chess in the eye of National Master Kamal Abdullah! - Part 1

Today as scheduled, National Master (NM) Kamal Abdullah give a chess talk at Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC), Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The talk was organised by NMCC in conjuction of the official opening ceremony of the chess centre.

Kamal Abdullah is a former National champion who has played many international tournaments such as Olympiad and Zonal . In this session, Kamal share a lot of story, tips and his opinion about chess .

Among the participants who attend this talk is ex-National player - Mohd Fairin Zakaria and his daughter - Elyana , Mohd Saprin Sabri ( also former National player) , Muhammad Arshad - Secretary of Terengganu Chess Association , Mohd Zambri Syariff, Khairul Annuar, Shukri, Rizal Ahmad Kamal and his kids. Two famous local chess blogger - Marcus Yeoh and Andrew Ooi(gilachess) also turn up to give support!

One interesting story shared by Kamal is when he was once affected by unusual " chess syndrome". In the past, many times he faced a situation where he will see or think about chess everywhere he looks or go but he can't think about chess when he was at the chess board.

After telling his chess experience, Kamal ask the participants to form a group and play a group chess game . The participants are divide into three groups and they have to play a chess game where they have to choose a move alternately . The funny things is at several stages, the players have to proceed with a "not so favourable position" which was produced by other participant.

At the end, all participants seems to enjoy this group game. Kamal said this is a good exercise because the idea is you will not only look/analyze your move but your opponent move as well.

Kamal also show and discuss an interesting immortal game from the legendary chess player - Paul Morphy . The game against Napoleon Marache create a lively discussion among the participants because everyone was eager to find the best reply but in the critical position below, no one found the correct answer.

In the above position, the particpants suggest moves such as 19...Ne2, 19...Nh4 ; and 19...c2. However all that move is not the best answer . Mohd Fairin Zakaria suggest a good move 19...Qg4 threatening 20...g5 pinning the bishop which good enough for a win . However the best move is actually 19...Ng3 !

One excellent tips from the Master is he suggest to chess players to study 100 chess diagrams every week. What he means is to solve chess diagrams which contains opening, middle game or endgame position . He said this type of study has give him good results.

National Master (NM) Kamal Abdullah (photo right) will give a chess lecture at the new Chess Centre in KL - Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC). NMCC vision is to provide all chess related services such as chess coaching,training, simultaneous display, arbiter services and tournament organising. This centre is also plan to sell chess equipment such as chess books, magazines, clocks, chess sets , demo boards and other equipments.

Lesson of The Week (1) - occupation of weak points!

In his book Chess: The art of logical thinking, GM Neil McDonald touch an important topic about the occupation of a weak points . It is an important topic for all chess players because it occur frequently in our games.

Chess players must have faced similiar position as diagram below, many times.

Let diagnosed the position carefully. Black has just play 20...Qxh6. In my opinion, in this particular position , it's not worth to analyzed in term of candidate moves, the imbalance factors , the threat or other factors because white obviously must take the black's queen on h6 . White have two obvious chooise which is i) 21.gxh6 or ii) 21.Rxh6...

In analyzing this type of position, Mc Donald suggest the use of GM Siegbert Tarrasch approach (photo right) :-

"weak points or holes in the opponents position must be occupied by piece, not pawns"

So, in position above , white must play 21.Rxh6! because if 21.gxh6? the weak black square on h6 is more or less can't be occupied by white piece anymore because and more thing, white have block the h file with his own pawn which block his major pieces ( queen or rooks) to pass trough.

When your opponent is weak in certain colour of square ( black or white) , usually he will also weak in another clour of square. In this case, Anderssen has a permenant black squares weakness on his kingside so now Miles exploit Anderssen's white square with 34.Bf1! Nc7 35.Bd3 1–0 Black resign because he can't stop white to play Bxg6 next and black's kingside will be destroy.

Today Neo Manhattan Chess Centre (NMCC) organised a briefing about it chess coaching programme to interested chess players /coaches . The briefing was conducted by Shamsol Bahrin at NMCC, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. The six of the guest is ex-National player Mohd Fairin Zakaria, Kamaluddin Yusof, Mohd Zambri Syarif , Mohd Nazri , Shamsudin Mat Isa and Haslindah Ruslan.

The surprised name in the today's NMCC guest is Mohd Nazri who has been "idled" in local chess scenes for years ( Probably a decade ?). However from my observation on his play during the blitz session right after the briefing, he still have the touch which once brought him among country top players. Interestingly he mentioned that he once play 600 online games ( bullet-1minute) in 3 days !

After the briefing the guest proceed with compulsory "agenda"- chess blitz!

NM Kamal Abdullah will give the first chess lecture for the new Chess Centre!

6th February 2009 - An agreement has been made between Mr. Irwan Zulkenain - the representative of the soon to be open chess centre with National Master (NM) Kamal Abdullah to conduct the first chess lecture on the 22nd February 2009 at Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Kuala Lumpur .

The lecture will take about two hours and the title that have been agreed is chess : in the eye of a National Master or "catur : pada pandangan seorang National Master" . In the two hours chess lecture, NM Kamal Abdullah will conduct an interactive session where he will share his knowledge and experience about chess, analyzing game, giving chess quiz and as an experienced chess player who has gone trough the pre and post computer chess age... he will share his opinion about the influence of chess programme in today chess development.

The Chess Centre will offer attractive promotion fee for those who is interested to join the first session.

The details of the event will be announced next week.

A local chess centre will be launched in Kuala Lumpur this month. The first coaching session will be conducted by a well known National Master (NM).
